What it is

Houston Gem & Mineral Society is a nonprofit Houston, Texas earth-science and lapidary club with a dedicated clubhouse. Official About / home copy: dedicated to study in Earth Science and related fields and arts, with a major focus on education through clubhouse classes, a scholarship fund, section meetings, and an annual gem, mineral, jewelry & fossil show. Special interest sections include Lapidary & Silversmithing, Paleontology, Minerals, Gemstones & Faceting, Beading, Day Light, and Youth. HGMS is a member of the South Central Federation of Mineral Societies (SCFMS) and affiliated with the American Federation of Mineralogical Societies (AFMS). It is not a commercial lapidary supply shop and not a standalone week-long residential teaching school.

Who it’s for

Rock hounds, fossil collectors, lapidary and jewelry hobbyists, families, and Greater Houston enthusiasts who want monthly general meetings (visitors welcome), section programs, member shop access after equipment instruction, discounted clubhouse classes, field trips, the Backbender’s Gazette, and the annual public show. Membership page: open to persons with rockhound or fossil “fever,” from junior members through seniors, with family participation encouraged.
